Australia- Murdoch University International Student Scholarship

From 2007 the Research and Development Board, in co-operation with the University, will be offering 10 Murdoch University Research Studentships which will also have a Tuition Fee Waiver with them (Murdoch International Research Scholarships).

Murdoch will also continue to offer Australian Government funded Endeavour International Postgraduate Research Scholarships.

In addition, the Board is also sponsoring 10 International Partnership Scholarships.
The Board will match funding from a genuine research-funding agency equal to the current value of the Murdoch University Research Studentship (Living allowance) . These funds will be provided to the candidate as the stipend component of the scholarship (i.e. not maintenance funding).

An application can also be made for the Research and Development Board to pay the full international tuition fee for the candidate.

From 2007 a large number of international scholarships will be offered through the Australian Government’s expanded Endeavour program. From 2007 to 2011 this program will offer over 6000 awards in participating regions for higher education. Introduction

Applications are invited from suitably qualified international students for scholarships to undertake the degree of Master by Research (MPhil),Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) or Doctor of Education (EdD) at Murdoch University. The scholarships, which are for full-time study, cover tuition fees and health insurance premiums only.

The University provides a living allowance of $A19,616 per annum (2007 rate) for successful applicants and an allowance for thesis production costs. Travel and relocation costs are the responsibility of the applicant.

The purpose of the International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (IPRS) scheme is to attract top quality international postgraduate students to areas in which the University has specialized research strengths and to support Australia's research effort. Eligibility Criteria

Awards will only be available to those students who:

  • have completed a four year undergraduate degree at first-class honours level or equivalent.

  • are enrolling as a full-time candidate for a Master's degree by research EdD or a PhD degree;

  • will be commencing their course on or before 31 March 2007;

  • provide evidence of achieving English language proficiency to the standards listed at the following website: http://www.international.murdoch.edu.au/postgrad_english.html . (Please note: Students who have completed their previous degrees in English are NOT required to supply either TOEFL or IELTS results. However, applicants from non-English speaking countries must attach a statement from the University confirming that the language of instruction was in English and that all written requirements of the degree were completed in English).

The following students will be ineligible for a scholarship under the scheme:

  • International students who have already obtained a PhD degree or equivalent.

  • International students who have already obtained a Master's degree by research and are applying to undertake another Master's degree by research.

  • International students who have already commenced the degree for which they are seeking an award prior to 1 January 2008 unless the applicant can establish that they were unable to apply for an award commencing in 2007.

  • International students who are currently studying on a scholarship sponsored by AUSAID or have just completed study on such a scholarship. These students are required to return to their home country for at least one year before returning to Australia. Australian and New Zealand citizens or permanent residents.

  • Applications are open to citizens of all overseas countries (excluding New Zealand) who are commencing full time postgraduate study in the first semester of the year 2008. There is no age restriction. Candidates will be required to enrol at Murdoch University as "international students" and must maintain "international student" status for the duration of their enrolment in the University or risk the possibility of continuing as a fee-paying student.

  • The allocation of awards will be restricted to students who can demonstrate that they have adequate English proficiency.

Application

It is important that applicants include as an attachment to their application:

  • evidence of a major thesis (of approx 6 months duration)

  • evidence of research experience which may be equivalent to a major thesis

  • examiners reports of any dissertation or thesis

  • evidence of fellowship or professional memberships

  • in the case of art, design or other performance based programmes where other criteria may be inappropriate, international or national reputation by way of exhibitions, performance, or production with your role clearly explained.

  • Please also attach a list of any publications including work which you have done individually or jointly with others. The list should be presented with the following information:

Title
Authorship (indicate your contribution, if it is a joint publication) Type of Publication (eg journal article, poster, CD-Rom, conference paper, performance, web-based publication) Is the publication refereed? Details on how this item contributes to the proposed thesis

  • Applicants who have had sustained contact with a potential academic research supervisor at Murdoch will be considered favourably.

ACADEMIC REFEREE'S REPORTS

All IPRS applicants must provide written references from two academic referees. These may be sent together with your application form, or you may arrange for your referees to send them directly to Murdoch International. Referees should preferably be senior academics familiar with your most recent work, and in a position to comment on your future potential for research and contribution to the field of knowledge. It is your responsibility to ensure that your referees submit their references by the due date in September. Your application may be significantly disadvantaged without these reports. Murdoch International PhD Scholarships

In 2008, Murdoch University will be offering 10 of these scholarships for international research students, in addition to the Endeavour International Postgraduate Research Studentship (Endeavour IPRS) and the International partnership scholarships. These scholarships which are for full time study cover tuition fees and health Insurance premiums only. The University will also provide a living allowance of $A19,231 (in 2006) for successful applicants. Travel and relocation costs are the responsibility of the applicant.
